Fly Rod and Reel
Whether you’re a newcomer or a veteran to fly fishing, one of the most exciting things is to invest in new equipment, namely the fly rod and reel.
It is a great feeling to wade out there with brand new gear and catching your first fish (with the new equipment). The problem is really to know where you ought to spend your money. There are so many different types of rods and flyfishing reels that it’s hard to know what’s right for you.
This question will have different answers depending on the environment and what you’re going after and is way outside the scope of this particular article. But, I can give you general advice as to where the money is best spent when looking a new set of fly rod and reel.
If you’re thinking the fly rod, then you’re right. The rod is definitely the MOST important piece of your equipment, followed by the line, and lastly by the reel. While getting a good reel is important, the delivery mechanism to cast the fly to catch the fish (i.e. the rod and the line) is the most important.
